JOTÁN AFANADOR

Jotan Afanador is a Puerto Rican-American professional drummer from the Bronx, New York.
He’s best known for being the drummer for Aventura and currently touring with Romeo Santos. Jotan was already an accomplished drummer before Aventura. In the Bronx he started playing around age two, had his first professional gig at age 7 and set a world record in 2002 with 1,123 single strokes in 60 seconds at the age of 21. He later set another record in 2005 with 1,219 single strokes.

He also brought his brilliance and his touch while performing with artists including Jennifer Lopez, Don Omar, Wisin & Yandel, Sergio Mendes, Nestor Torres, Norah Jones, and others.

Jotan isn't just known for being fast—he has an extraordinary technical background. When Jotan started with Aventura around 2004, drums weren't normally part of bachata, however, they specifically asked him to experiment. He recalls being told to play what he felt over their bachata and create something new. He added drum-set fills alongside the percussion, and the band liked the result enough to bring him into the group. His goal was to incorporate his ideas while preserving the traditional feel. He brings rock/funk/jazz-style drumming into bachata. His influences include drummers such as Buddy Rich, Dave Weckl, Gene Krupa, Vinnie Colaiuta and Dennis Chambers.
Jotan isn't simply playing a drum-set version of traditional bachata. He helped introduce a much bigger, more modern drum vocabulary into the genre. So his vocabulary is much broader than traditional Latin percussion.
